Coleman Bazelon

Board President

Dr. Coleman Bazelon is an economic expert and principal at The Brattle Group, as well as a board member of the ACLU and ACLU-MD, and a passionate advocate for social justice. He is a recognized expert in the field of telecommunications economics, frequently testifying before Congress, federal and state courts, regulatory bodies, and domestic and international arbitration panels. Dr. Bazelon is also expert in Intellectual Property valuation and public interest analyses and he serves as an economist for the Major League Baseball Players Association.

Throughout his career, Dr. Bazelon has led several pro bono projects at The Brattle Group. He has served as an expert for the federal government in challenging Texas' voter ID laws, filed numerous reports at the Federal Communications Commission on behalf of the Martha Wright Petitioners regarding the high costs of calls from prisons and jails, and led a team that quantified reparations owed for transatlantic chattel slavery in the Americas.

“I founded Public Interest Experts because I believe that the quality of expert testimony in public interest litigation should match the high standards seen in commercial litigation. As a consulting economist and expert witness, I’ve spent much of my career navigating the intense pressure and scrutiny of high-stakes cases, where experts are supported by top-tier teams to ensure their testimony stands up under the most rigorous cross-examination. The incentives and resources in the commercial world drive the best and brightest experts to the table, ensuring that clients get the highest-quality support for their cases.

But when I’ve worked on pro bono cases—cases that challenge injustices like voting rights violations or economic disparities—I’ve noticed a significant gap. There’s no system in place to ensure these cases get the same caliber of expertise. I’ve served as an expert in public interest litigation, and while I’ve always been committed to the work, I’ve often found myself stepping into complex cases where I lacked the specialized experience that would be expected in a commercial setting. This gap in resources and support is not just a logistical issue—it’s an issue of fairness.

Public Interest Experts was founded to address that disparity. I want to ensure that the same high level of expert support available to major corporations and wealthy clients is accessible to the public interest causes that truly matter. By providing top-tier expert testimony and strategic guidance for public interest litigation, we can help ensure that these important cases have the best possible chance to make a real, lasting impact.”
